Everyone wants a degree of privacy in their garden. And if you place a lot of value on naturalness, you will quickly choose living plants. But which plants can you use to protect your neighbors? The space, your patience, the maintenance effort that you are willing to accept and of course the legal regulations determine, among other things, the right choice. We have put together some tips and types of plants that you can plant as a privacy screen to help you with planning and preparation.
Which plants to protect your neighbors – what are the guidelines?
The garden is yours and you should be able to do whatever you like there, you might think now. But it's not like that at all. In order to preserve peace between neighbors and to accommodate everyone, almost every federal state has stipulated certain regulations that should be taken into account and adhered to when choosing visual protection. After all, your neighbors shouldn't be short of sun just because your privacy crops grow too tall, for example. You wouldn't like that either! It is also best to talk to your neighbor about your plans before planting privacy hedges and the like.
At the end of the article you will find a link to a list of all federal states and their guidelines. Now we come to the question “Which plants are suitable as privacy screens?”
Which plants to protect your neighbors?
The selection itself is of course very large: trees, bushes, bushes, grasses, climbing plants with existing fences and especially the hedge plants are all wonderfully suitable. Which type it should be depends on how much time you want to invest in care, whether you prefer it to be evergreen or if you want to be happy with flowers, whether a thick screen should be created from plants or whether it should may also be lights. A selection of suitable and particularly popular variants can be found below.
Privacy shield in the bucket with the horsetail
The horsetail (Equisetum japonicum) is a really nice looking plant that is commonly used for pond design. It grows up to 1.5 meters, which is ideal for a privacy screen with plants if you plant it in a plant container. This is also the recommendation for the garden anyway, since the plant spreads very quickly and can take up the garden quite quickly. Planted in this way, the plants are perfectly suitable for the terrace, because then you can place them in any container and use the container plants as a screen where you need them.
If you still want to plant the horsetail directly in the garden, consider a root barrier that prevents it from spreading. The planting distance is 30 to 50 centimeters depending on the species. That makes about 3 to 5 plants per square meter.
Natural privacy to the neighbor with the thuja
The so-called tree of life is a real classic among hedge plants and extremely popular because it is not only easy to care for, but also grows quickly. The fact that a shape cut is not absolutely necessary is an advantage, which of course will also please your neighbor. However, if you value a cut hedge (a regular topiary helps the plant to grow densely), you can assume that the thuja will easily tolerate this pruning.
The fast-growing hedge must be shortened, however, if the guidelines in your state require it, because the thuja can reach a height of up to 20 meters. Plants one meter high need a distance in front of and behind the hedge of 40 to 60 centimeters, larger ones even up to 90 centimeters. The necessary distance between the individual plants varies depending on the purchase size and type of thuja between 30 and 50 cm. It is best to ask your dealer.
Which plants are still suitable as privacy protection to the neighbor?
Hornbeam for beautiful hedges
In the hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) it is actually a tree, which of course can also stand alone. However, due to its dense foliage, it is also very popular for hedges. This plant is not evergreen, but it does not lose its leaves in winter. However, they turn yellow in autumn and turn brown in winter. However, this is completely sufficient to offer sufficient privacy protection even in the cold season.
The privacy screen is very robust and has the ability to regenerate quickly. Depending on the location and soil, the tree can reach heights of 10 to 20 meters. In order to comply with local regulations, depending on the state, you will probably have to make regular cuts. These trees are best planted as privacy screens in autumn or at the end of March at the latest. There are 3 to 5 plants per meter.
Which plants as a screen to the neighbor – yew
The yew (Taxus baccata) impresses with its beautiful needles and is also a classic. So if you are wondering which plants are suitable as privacy protection in the garden, you will get another answer with this hedge plant. Apart from the fact that the yew is easy to care for and robust, it also does something good for the birds, because they love to hide and nest in the thick branches. Plant 5 plants per meter. If the yew trees are 80 to 100 cm tall, even 3 plants per meter are sufficient.
Flowering shrubs as privacy – the beautiful hydrangea
If you want to enjoy flowers, you can consider the impressive hydrangea as a privacy screen. However, since most varieties do not grow sufficiently high, you should inquire beforehand which plants are suitable as a privacy screen to the neighbor. Panicle hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculata) are a good choice, for example, if you want a shrub as a privacy screen because they grow up to 2 meters high. When pruning, you also do not risk losing the abundance of flowers with this variety.
In large gardens, these shrubs can also be combined with other plants as a screen to protect the neighbor – for example, an evergreen or other high hedge for the background and pretty grasses in front of the hydrangeas. It looks much more diverse and beautiful. Since the panicle hydrangeas grow quite tall and wide, you also need a larger distance from each other. This should not be less than one meter if you use the bushes as a privacy screen.
Grasses for privacy – elephant grass
Are you wondering which plants are suitable for protecting your neighbors? How about the beautiful grasses? Grasses are particularly popular in modern garden design because they look elegant, but also add texture and often color to the garden. And luckily, there are also plenty of tall grasses with which you can plant a privacy screen to your neighbor. The elephant grass (Miscanthus x giganteus), also called Chinese reed, is one of them.
It can grow up to 3 meters high and even decorates the garden in a beautiful yellow in autumn. The hardy plant loves moisture and is therefore ideal for privacy at the garden pond or pool. If the grass is watered sufficiently, it can also decorate other areas. Plan a planting distance of at least one meter. Even better would be 1.5.
Garden with privacy screen, which plants are suitable – plant cherry laurel
Cherry laurel is also an evergreen plant (Prunus laurocerasus). So if you absolutely want evergreen hedge plants, you are making a good choice. The leaves of this plant are particularly beautiful to look at due to their gloss and it is no wonder that it is one of the most popular rear plants. The many varieties that you can choose from are easy to care for and fast-growing, with which they also score. These specimens can reach a height of up to three meters.
You should keep a distance of 40 to 60 centimeters from fences, sheds, garden sheds and other elements in the garden. There are also particularly high-growing varieties, for which even 90 centimeters are recommended. The planting distance between the individual plants of the hedge also depends on the maximum height. For plants up to 1 meter high, 3 pieces per meter are ideal, while specimens from 2.5 meters are even planted only one plant per meter.
Which plants as privacy to the neighbor – list for planting distance depending on height:
- 3 plants per meter: 80-100 cm
- 2.5 plants per meter: 100-125 cm
- 2 plants per meter: 125-225 cm
- 1.5 plants per meter 225-250 cm
- 1 plant per meter: 250-350 cm
Climbing plants as privacy screens – the wisteria
Climbing plants are suitable as a privacy screen if they have the necessary support. This can be an existing fence or a specially made climbing aid. How stable it has to be depends, of course, on the plant and its height. The wisteria is very popular and without a doubt one of the most beautiful plants (Wisteria sinensis), which blooms blue-violet between May and June, but also looks pretty with its green leaves during the rest of the season.
The wisteria can become very robust and large, so it is important that the climbing aid is sufficiently stable. Depending on the size of the area you want to shield, a plant in the garden can be sufficient as a privacy screen. Otherwise, a planting distance of 3 to 5 meters is recommended. Which plants are still suitable as a privacy screen to the neighbor if you prefer a different color or would like to combine several? How about the laburnum or the white rain?
Which plant is suitable as a privacy screen for the shade?
A beautiful climbing plant is also the ivy, which is perfect if you are looking for evergreen plants to complete the garden design with a privacy screen. Very shady areas in the garden are a big challenge and if you are looking for the right privacy screen for such an area, the selection is relatively small. Then ivy can be a good solution as a privacy screen. Another advantage is that it doesn't need a lot of space to grow because it only needs a few centimeters.
A climbing aid is required so that the ivy can grow up. From time to time you have to help him by tying the shoots to the tendril so that he stays on the tendril and does not spread otherwise. The ivy should also be cut regularly. Shoots that spread in a different direction are simply cut off. This is of course particularly important for the neighbors. Four plants are recommended per meter.
Which plants as privacy protection to the neighbors – bamboo as privacy protection
A bamboo privacy screen, which is one of the grasses, is not new, but its popularity is steadily increasing. Especially the umbrella bamboo (Fargesia murielae) is a good choice because it is robust and hardy. This type of bamboo can grow up to 3 meters high. So if you ask yourself which plants are suitable as privacy screens for patios and gardens, you will get an answer again. This bamboo is also a good choice if you are looking for a fast growing plant.
If a bamboo plant is to stand alone, a distance of around 60 to 80 cm is ideal. As a hedge plant, the distance may also be smaller so that dense growth is possible. Then you can plant the individual plants 35 to 40 cm to each other.
