Fasting before Easter: Why medical doctors consider fasting to be health-related
Lent traditionally begins just after the end of the carnival. But the reason why more and more Germans are opting for a fasting before Easter is not religion. According to studies, the majority of respondents (over 60%) believe that fasting is healthy. And many medical professionals also consider it to be health-related, especially for rheumatism patients and people with chronic diseases. It is important that you adhere to some basic rules.
Fasting before Easter: that's why fasting is healthy
Fasting before Easter has a positive effect on our health. Fasting people with high blood pressure can lower their blood pressure, even diabetics can partially (and only after consulting their family doctor) regulate their blood sugar level and need less insulin during the fasting days. Fasting can also do a lot for healthy people. It stimulates the metabolism and helps to switch to a healthy diet.
Anyone who decides to do this should definitely consult a doctor first. He can best judge whether you should fast under medical supervision in a specialized clinic or whether you can stay at home. As long as the doctor allows it, you can start. The beginning is a big challenge, especially for the first three days, it is difficult for most people. Many of them report cold feet and hands, headaches and dizziness. The doctors therefore recommend drinking 2 liters of water a day from the first day. Then fasting is much easier. From the third day onwards, the body slowly begins to get used to fasting and accordingly releases significantly more happiness hormones. They have an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect.
Fasting before Easter: Which methods are available?
There are different methods for fasting before Easter. The Buchinger method, for example, is very popular. Lent begins with a preparatory phase that lasts several days. The goal is to eat as light and healthy as possible and thus relieve the intestines. The diet is gradually changed, first steamed vegetables and fruit are eaten, then light vegetable soups follow. Then you can start fasting. Sufficient water and at least 250 ml of yoghurt daily ensure that the body does not lose any muscle mass. The post-fasting phase is decisive for whether you can enjoy the positive results of fasting in the long term.
