Eating while standing: unhealthy or good for digestion?
The stressful everyday life hardly leaves time for a lunch break and life is often hectic and breathless even after work. Understandably, most then try to save as much time as possible. Eating while standing is no longer a rarity. What used to be a ritual has now become nothing more than a fast food mentality, our mothers and grandmothers claim. But is that actually true, is eating while standing really unhealthy as assumed? We take a close look at the question.
Is standing food bad for digestion?
If you eat standing, you risk blocking your digestion, it is said. But is it really true? There are currently insufficient studies on the subject. It is therefore not scientifically proven whether eating while standing is really unhealthy. Many doctors still believe that standing food could cause digestive problems. The reason is not that we eat the food while standing. The stress on the body is much more critical if we quickly eat a curry sausage or a roll in between. This means that we swallow a lot of air while eating or that we do not chew the food well enough. This causes large pieces of food to enter our stomach, which can damage the organ. This fast food mentality can adversely affect our digestion even if we otherwise eat healthy. The ritualized meal, in which we sit down and take time, turns out to be much better.
There are also several other reasons why it is unhealthy to eat while standing:
1] Eating while standing is bad for the digestion also because it makes you feel full much more slowly. In most cases we have already eaten too much. That alone can lead to obesity.
2] When we stand, the heart pumps the blood much faster and works twice as much to move the blood through the body than when we sit or lie down. The body's hormone cortisol is released, which inhibits the digestive enzymes and can affect our taste. A study was conducted by Dr. Dipayan Biswas from the University of South Florida. The subjects were divided into two groups – the first group sat at the table, the second group stood. The brownies served to all participants were then evaluated differently by the two groups. The first group found them delicious, the second – average. The people who stood could not notice differences in the temperature, as well as in the sugar content.
3] When sitting we can concentrate better on the food. It is said that the eyes also eat and the scientists can confirm that. No wonder that many nutrition experts recommend ritualized meals. If the process is known from childhood, eating disorders in adulthood can be avoided. It is particularly beneficial for small children if the family sits down and eats together every evening. This not only trains the eating process, but also reduces the stress from everyday life. Healthy meals are usually served at family dinners. This fact also has a positive effect on the children.
Eating while standing during lunch?
Eating while standing is not a good idea. The nutrition experts only mention one important exception: if we sit at work all day long, then standing food is permitted during lunch break. However, it is important that we observe some basic rules:
1. Try to create a relaxed dining atmosphere. Less so is a snack on the street, where all buyers are in a hurry anyway and are totally stressed out. It makes more sense to find a cozy dining area next to a window where you can look out into the distance. So the eyes can relax. When dining out with colleagues, try not to talk about work. This way you can escape everyday stress for a short time.
2. Eat slowly, you need at least 20 minutes for a meal. Try to chew it thoroughly and focus only on your meal time. Eating too quickly can cause bloating. If you take your time instead, you will stimulate digestion.
3. Eat a varied diet. This is especially true if you want to eat while standing. For example, you can fill a lunch box with healthy homemade treats. This way you can ensure that you do not eat too much in the snack bar and keep an overview of the daily number of calories.
