What can you do with mosquito spray yourself? Suitable essential oils and recipes
The weather is slowly becoming more beautiful and summer is approaching. Unfortunately, the mosquito-free time comes to an end. It would be a good idea to make provisions now and to equip yourself with an effective bug spray. If you want to do without the chemical products from the trade, you can also easily make a natural mosquito spray yourself. We list some essential oils against insects and explain how you can use them to create an anti-mosquito spray that can be used to effectively repel mosquitoes.
Make mosquito spray yourself – which essential oils are suitable?
It is the scent of certain plants that acts as a deterrent to mosquitoes. That is why essential oils, which are extracted from these plants, are your best helper in the fight against the pests. But which oils are suitable as home remedies for mosquitoes? Here is a list:
- Neem oil (not during pregnancy or when planning a pregnancy!)
- Rose geranium
- Tea tree oil (also against ticks)
- Lemon eucalyptus
The substances Citronellal and Geraniol are particularly effective against mosquitoes. Geraniol also scares off ticks. Citronella oil even contains both substances, which is also the reason why it is used particularly often in purchased mosquito sprays. This oil is also one of the best varieties for DIY mosquito sprays.
Make bug spray yourself
If you want to make a mosquito spray yourself, it depends on the right mixing ratio. The sprays usually have a minimum content of 2 to 5 percent and are diluted with another base oil. Suitable base oils include:
- Jojoba oil
- Coconut oil
- almond oil
- olive oil
- castor oil
- Black cumin oil (also effective against ticks)
- Mustard oil
Which one you use depends on your preferences, because the oils differ not only in terms of their aroma and the strength of the aroma, but also in their consistency. Just try different ones to find the best one for yourself.
If you want to make a mosquito spray for children yourself, you can easily use such oils, provided there is no allergy. In contrast, sprays and other agents that are applied are not suitable as a natural mosquito repellent for babies under 6 months, so they should resort to an alternative.
In principle, you can combine any essential and base oil to get the spray according to your fragrance preferences. Not everyone likes the scent of eucalyptus, cloves or geraniums, for example, so they can easily be replaced by other effective scents. In the following, we would like to introduce you to a few ideas for combining oils.
Make your own mosquito spray with lavender, palmarosa and eucalyptus
- 50 ml base oil
- 5 drops of lavender
- 15 drops of eucalyptus
- 15 drops of palmarosa
As already mentioned, lavender is very effective against mosquitoes. In combination with the other oils, the effect is even enhanced. If you want to make this mosquito spray yourself, simply put all the oils in a spray bottle, shake them well and the spray can be used.
Mosquito repellent spray with lemongrass, geranium and rosemary
- 1 1/2 tablespoons of water
- 1 tsp base oil
- 8 drops of rosemary oil
- 8 drops of lemongrass oil
- 4 drops of geranium oil
Put the ingredients in a spray bottle, close them and shake vigorously to mix all the oils well. Also shake the bottle before each use. The quantities can be doubled if you want to fill a larger bottle.
Mix of many oils against mosquitoes and other insects
- 115 ml distilled water
- 115 ml witch hazel water (also known as witch hazel)
- 1/2 tsp vegetable glycerin
- 20 drops of lemongrass oil
- 15 drops of lemon oil
- 10 drops of eucalyptus oil
- 10 drops of tea tree oil
- 5 drops of rosemary oil
- 5 drops of cinnamon leaf oil
If you want to make this mosquito spray yourself, put all the ingredients in a spray bottle, shake it vigorously and the DIY insect screen is ready.
Spray with witch hazel water, vinegar and essential oils as a natural mosquito repellent
- 60 ml witch hazel water
- 60 ml apple cider vinegar
- 20 drops of any essential oil from the list above (you can also combine several)
Put all the ingredients in a spray bottle and shake them. You should also do this before each use. Then you can not only spray the skin, but also your clothes with the mosquito repellent.
Make your own mosquito spray – recipe with peppermint and tea tree oil
- 340 ml of witch hazel water
- 15 drops of lemon oil
- 15 drops of lemongrass oil
- 10 drops of peppermint oil
- 10 drops of tea tree oil
If you want to make this mosquito spray yourself, mix all the ingredients in a bottle by shaking them well. The spray is then ready for use. You should also shake the spray well before the next application, as the oils separate from each other over time.
Make your own mosquito spray with neem oil
- 2 tablespoons of neem oil
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
- 10-15 drops of lemon oil
If the coconut oil is solid, you should first melt it in a water bath or in the microwave. Then mix all the ingredients together in a spray bottle. Shake them vigorously and now use the homemade bug spray.
