Make summer lanterns – 3 handicraft instructions with glasses, shells and cans
For a cozy evening on the terrace, candles are simply not to be missed. In addition to solar lamps and other subtle light sources, they create a cozy atmosphere that allows us to enjoy the warm summer evenings even better. A wind light that is also homemade is even better! We have put together a few ideas that you can use to create summer lanterns to decorate your terrace, balcony or living room.
Make summer lanterns with exotic flair – pineapple glasses
The pineapple makes us dream of exotic countries and is directly associated with summer. Create a cheerful atmosphere in your outdoor area with these cute models. If you want to make gifts yourself, the funny fruits in the form of candles are also suitable. You need the following things:
- yellow wax flakes)
- wick
- small mason jars (170 g / 6 oz in the example)
- thin green felt
- hot glue
- black and green acrylic paint and brush
- optional: pineapple fragrance oil
How to make the lantern decoration:
Put a drop of hot glue in the middle of the glass and stick the wick there. When cutting, make sure that it is not too short. You can shorten it later at any time. Melt the wax flakes in a water bath with constant stirring and add 20-30 drops of pineapple aroma to the wax. Pour the wax carefully into the jars. Keep the wick straight. Let the wax in the lantern glass become cold and hard.
In the meantime, you can paint the lids and make leaf crowns for summer lanterns. Paint the lids green and let the paint dry (optionally you can also buy green lids). Take a strip of felt, cut a zigzag pattern in the middle, roll up the zigzag strip and glue the end of the strip to the roll with hot glue. Carefully unfold the obtained leaves and stick the crown of leaves on a dried lid. Use black paint to paint small “V” s on the glasses and the DIY decoration is ready.
Summery lanterns are made in noble, modern colors
Although these tealight holders were originally made for a Thanksgiving party, they are just as suitable for a summer decoration. Above all, it is the colors that impressed us. The combination of neutral and chic white and fine gold simply looks beautiful. The golden color inside can also reflect the light of the candle and create a particularly nice atmosphere. You can punch any letters, numbers or motifs into the cans and in this way create individual and personalized summer lanterns. If you want to make the decoration yourself, you need:
- Cans
- primer
- golden and white spray paint (or any other colors; alternatively acrylic paints)
- rice
- water
- duct tape
- template
Make summer lanterns as decoration ideas:
A template can help you design patterns. There are numerous motifs on the Internet that you can use for this purpose (search for “tin-pinch pattern”). Of course, you can also come up with your own designs, draw on a piece of paper and then transfer them to the can with a nail and hammer. Either way, the procedure is the same if you want to make summer lanterns:
Remove the labels from the cans and the glue. The adhesive can be easily removed with a mix of olive oil and baking powder. Then fill the cans with rice and water and freeze everything. This will make the can more stable and prevent the sides from bending when hammering. Take the first can out of the freezer, place the template anywhere and stick it with the adhesive tape. Since the adhesive tape cannot stick to the frozen surface, you have to wrap it around the entire can once and fix it on both sides of the paper.
Now hammer the holes into the can according to the template. Then remove the rice and ice and once the surfaces have dried, first paint them with the primer, let it dry and then spray the inside of the cans with the golden color. Let the paint dry and turn the cans upside down. Now you can spray the outside white, let the layer dry and apply a second one if necessary. Let the colors dry for at least 24 hours before putting real candles in them.
Make your own decoration with shells – Maritime candle holder
It is typical of craft ideas in summer to use the shell as a decoration. So if you still have some from your last vacation, you can use them right away, or you can simply buy them. This candle holder was originally intended for a large candle, but can also be used for tea lights. How to make summer lanterns:
- Wooden base
- Shellfish
- hot glue
- Brush and clear glue
- Glitter
- optional: wood lacquer for the base
Make a table decoration yourself with mussels:
If you make summer lanterns, you can paint the base in any color, but you can also leave it natural. If you paint, let the paint dry well before continuing. Start by gluing a row of shells along the edge of the base. In the next row, glue the shells firmly in relation to the previous ones, i.e. always between two shells. Then you no longer stick the shells on the wood, but on the shells of the previous row.
So you can continue until the wind light is high enough for you. However, make sure that a tealight fits in the middle and you can easily insert it in and take it out and light it. Now you can decorate the lantern: Put some transparent glue on the edges of the shells and sprinkle them with glitter. Let the glue dry and you can decorate the table and other things.
