How to make iron-on transfers yourself with cling film – simple instructions and templates
If you want to design your own clothes, iron-on motifs are a wonderful option. Since the finished models that are on the market do not always represent what you want on clothing, you can easily make iron-on transfers yourself. We’ll show you how to make these patches yourself and provide a few templates.
Iron-on patch make your own fish holding film
You can make wonderful iron-on transfers yourself with a laser printer by simply finding and printing the desired motif on the Internet. You can also print a photo on normal paper and iron it on as an iron-on transfer using the following instructions:
- any template
- Cling film
- Baking paper (or parchment paper)
- Iron
- T-shirt, cloth bag, trousers etc.
Design your own iron-on patches – tips and instructions
The garment for which you want to make the iron-on transfers yourself should be able to be ironed and withstand the heat. Accordingly, many artificial materials are unsuitable. For example, cotton and polyester are perfect. Just look at the label beforehand and check whether the fabric can be ironed.
Print out any image you want to iron on and cut it out. Place it on a piece of cling film and put another piece of film over it. Now cut out the foil roughly around the motif and place it on the fabric that you want to design yourself with iron-on transfers. Connect the iron, place baking paper on the motif and iron over the baking paper as soon as the iron is hot enough. The film melts due to the heat and thus serves as an adhesive and to seal the iron-on motifs.
Danger: Wash the garment carefully by hand and inside out so as not to ruin the motif as it is more delicate than most bought.
Design your own iron-on transfers with paper napkins
If you want to make iron-on transfers from paper yourself, you can use paper napkins instead of printed motifs. The procedure is the same as if you were to make an iron-on transfer yourself without a napkin: Cut it out, place it between two layers of cling film and transfer it to the fabric with an iron and baking paper.
Use iron-on foil and make the iron-on appliqué yourself
You can also buy special ironing film (transfer paper) and then print it with your favorite motif. You can use a laser or inkjet printer for this purpose. The film is provided with an adhesive that is activated by the heat when ironing on. In this way, the motif is transferred to the fabric and the film can be removed.
