As already mentioned, tooth sensitivity is particularly evident in short but acute pain. These symptoms appear when there is a risk factor such as hot or cold liquid, sweet or acidic foods, and a chemical effect. Brushing the teeth themselves also does this through the mechanical influence.
However, the cause of hypersensitivity is always the same reason – the exposure of the dentin. This is the most sensitive part of the tooth and one of its four components. The other three are cement, pulp and enamel. Dentin is rich in nerves that are generally protected by tooth enamel and gums. However, the appearance of certain factors can destroy its natural protection. Accordingly, this leads to direct contact with the outside, where painful sensations occur.
But what are the causes of the destruction of natural protection? We can therefore divide them into two groups: the destruction of the enamel and the retraction of the gums. There are many factors that can cause tooth enamel to deteriorate and erode. Additional improper cleaning and a toothbrush with too hard bristles or the use of a very intensive toothpaste also contribute to this.
Other reasons include eating excessively acidic foods and iterative vomiting in the event of an eating disorder. Lateral retraction of the gums is inevitable with increasing age, but can still be accelerated with poor oral hygiene and chronic gingivitis.
Once a specialist diagnoses tooth sensitivity, the most common recommendation is to use a toothbrush with super-fine and flexible bristles, as well as a desensitizing toothpaste and irrigator.
However, there are a few basic rules to follow to reduce the symptoms of sensitive teeth. First, avoid brushing your teeth too vigorously and aggressively. Get a fine toothbrush and use it systematically in different mouth areas in the same order.
Before you continue brushing your teeth, wait about an hour after eating or drinking acidic substances as they tend to soften the enamel and make it more sensitive. Also, keep in mind that persistent pain can alarm a serious problem. In this case, do not hesitate to see your dentist.
