Media and computer game addiction: Who can it hit?
According to statistics, 100% of young people aged 14 to 20 use the Internet. The percentages hardly decrease even from the age of 20. Even the group of people over 65 who are online for several hours a day grows from year to year. It is not unusual for Germans to need more and more time for their Internet activities. Ultimately, the trend is increasing worldwide. But how much is too much? The topic of media and computer game addiction is more topical than ever. The addiction has now been recognized by the WHO as an official mental illness. But who can it hit? According to doctors – everyone.
Media and computer game addiction: How is the diagnosis made?
Many adolescents spend a large part of their free time online. But in reality only a fraction of it is addictive. In the meantime, the World Health Organization has developed 9 criteria that will make diagnosis considerably easier. These include typical withdrawal symptoms that can also be observed in other addicts. Those affected are usually sad when they cannot play. They find it harder and harder to go to work or maintain relationships with other family members and friends. You have no interests other than playing. If all of these symptoms occur in a year, then it is most likely an addiction.
Media and computer game addiction: soon a common disease?
Several years ago there were allegations that role-playing games could be addictive. There are now reports of people suffering from computer game addiction for over 15 years. The few of those who are treated in an addiction clinic speak of a new beginning. But here too there are parallels to other dependencies, because the deduction is not that easy. Those affected report that noises or lighting can remind them of playing.
It is particularly difficult for the family, because such people usually withdraw and are apathetic. Most family members suspect that the person is suffering from depression. Once the addiction is recognized, therapy can begin. However, it is still unclear how many addicts there are worldwide. Many of them have not been diagnosed at all. In the worst case, doctors assume that media and computer addiction could become a widespread disease in the future.
