Lose weight with breakfast – study proves higher calorie burning in the morning

Burning calories while eating may sound strange at first. Losing weight with breakfast or with another meal seems rather unlikely. But that's actually the case. You have probably noticed that you get warmer when you eat. The reason for this is that the body uses energy during digestion. This results in the so-called food-induced thermogenesis (NIT) and ensures that about 10% of the calories gained are burned while eating.

Lose weight with breakfast – when does the body burn more calories?

Lose weight with breakfast - eat a lot in the morning rather than in the evening

A new study from Lübeck now proves that this thermogenesis is more pronounced in the morning than at later times of the day. Losing weight with breakfast could therefore be quite possible. Under the direction of Prof. Kerstin Oltmanns, her team tested the theory on a group of 16 men. All participants were of normal weight. Half of them were given a low-calorie breakfast and a high-calorie dinner, while the other half were on a reverse diet.

Better glucose metabolism in the morning

The glucose metabolism was then used, among other things, to determine the values of food-induced thermogenesis, which confirmed the theory: after eating, the body burns more calories in the morning than later in the day. Nutritionist Juliane Richter, who is also part of the research team, summarizes: “The results show that an identical calorie intake after high and low-calorie meals leads to a 2.5 times higher NIT in the morning compared to the evening. The increase in blood sugar and insulin levels was significantly reduced after breakfast compared to dinner. ”

It is important to emphasize that the amount of food has no influence on the intensity of the NIT or in other words: If you are on a diet, the body continues to burn more calories in the morning than in the evening. Another interesting finding from the study is that participants who received a low-calorie breakfast also reported greater appetite for sweets and snacks throughout the day.

Balanced and healthy breakfast for slimming instead of sumptuous dinner

Study researches whether you can burn more calories in the morning and lose weight as a result

This shows that a rich and good breakfast could help with weight loss than large portions in the evening. In a further study, the team would like to investigate whether losing weight with breakfast is really possible. In any case, that would be great news for anyone struggling with obesity. In any case, the study is beneficial for diabetics, who could now better adjust their eating plan based on the results.

Low-calorie dinner and high-calorie breakfast curbs the appetite for sweets

The study from the Psychoneurobiology Section was published on Oxford Academic.
