How to sew a simple respirator for children with this pattern

No topic is currently as controversial as wearing a respirator as protection against viruses and especially against Covid-19. While the WHO and specialists state that these should only be worn by the sick and do not offer protection to the healthy, many governments even require wearing a protective mask. Some of the masks have even become a fashion trend and are being voluntarily and proudly worn by more and more people. But what about our children? We want to do everything right when it comes to protecting our offspring. Below we explain whether a mask is suitable for children and how you can sew a respirator for children.

If a mask doesn't protect healthy people from the virus, why do authorities recommend wearing a protective mask? The reason is very simple: Some people who develop Covid-19 have only very slight to no symptoms. That means they're contagious without even knowing it. In such cases, the mask should protect others.

You have probably also heard that a protective mask can be dangerous for children. However, this is only the case for babies and toddlers under the age of three. With them there is a risk of suffocation, which is why a mask should be avoided. In general, the following applies: Those who have breathing problems, are passed out or are unable to remove the mask themselves, if necessary, must not wear one.

Important hygiene tips

Even if you want to sew or buy a respirator for children, you should not forget about proper hygiene. The thorough washing of hands according to the 20-second rule and the regular disinfection of the house should not be neglected. Children should leave the house as rarely as possible during these times. Even if they do not belong to the risk group and so far sick children have only had mild symptoms, you can still infect that risk group (e.g. the grandparents). Also teach the children not to touch each other's faces. This is of course not an easy task for the little ones, but try to pay attention to it anyway.

Sewing respirator for children - tips for use and sewing instructions

If you want to sew a respirator for children, you should make sure that it is the right size. It shouldn't be too tight or too loose. Several layers of fabric are recommended, with cotton being the most suitable. You can also reuse it, provided it can be washed at 90 degrees and then ironed.

Tip: Smaller children in particular are more difficult to move to wear such a mask. Therefore, colorful fabrics that are appealing to the child are best suited. The selection of fabrics is very wide these days, so you can definitely find something suitable with bright colors and interesting patterns or motifs.

You need:

  • Cotton fabric
  • 12 to 15 cm rubber band
  • Sewing needle
  • Pins
  • Filters (kitchen paper, coffee filters, etc.)

Sewing a breathing mask for children yourself – Instructions:

Cut two backs and one front out of the fabric

Print out the pattern you can find in the link below. There you get two sizes. The smaller size is best for children under 5 years and the larger size for children from 5 to 9 years. If you want to sew in a filter bag, transfer two backs (back) and one front (front). If you don't want a filter bag, two fronts are enough.

Fold the backs

Fold the back of the fabric and pin it to the front with pins

Sew fabrics together

Sew the fabrics together right to right and then turn them upside down

Fold the back of the self-made protective mask lengthways in the middle. Place the folded fabrics on the front right to right and pin them with pins. Now sew all edges along with the sewing machine and turn the fabric inside out. Now the beautiful sides should all face outwards. The two short edges now need a hem through which the rubber is pulled. You only need one seam on the left and one on the right, which is about 1 cm from the edge.

Halve the elastic, thread it through a suitable needle and use it to guide the elastic through the newly sewn hem. Be careful not to accidentally pull the rubber out of the needle. Then tie the two ends of the rubber into a knot. Then pull the fabric together as in the picture and sew the rubber at the ends of the hem so that nothing can slip. Repeat with the other side. If the rubber turns out to be too long, you can untie the knot and tie it closer again.
