How to paint stones with sayings – handicraft instructions, ideas & templates to print
The likeable lucky stones are currently one of the most popular handicrafts for both children and adults. Whether self-painted pictures, printed and transferred or sayings and poems – these pretty and above all unique pebbles are the perfect decoration and gift idea, but are also simply distributed somewhere in nature where someone should find them. Today we don't just want to explain to you how you can easily paint stones with sayings or how you can transfer printed words and sayings to them. We also have some suggestions and templates for you to print out.
Painting stones with sayings – what variants are there?
If you have a beautiful font, you can of course easily write any sayings directly on the stone. For this, the stone should be clean and dry. To make the font stand out better, you can first paint a white background with acrylic paints and then write on it when it has dried. Use a pen for writing that will not later run through the varnish to seal it.
Print and transfer sayings for the stones (for laser printers)
- Stone of any size
- printed saying
- clear nail polish
- alcoholic liquid (e.g. alcohol)
Another variant would be to print out a finished saying and then simply transfer it to the stone. To do this, you must first edit the writing, as it must be mirror-inverted. In addition, you will probably have to reduce the size of the saying so that it fits on the stone. You can do all of this with simple programs, including Microsoft Paint. Simply select the “Select” function and then select the image. You can now reduce or enlarge it and then flip it horizontally under “Rotate”.
Then print out the lettering and cut it out. Apply clear varnish to the surface of the stone on which the saying is to be placed and let it dry. Put a little of the alcohol-containing liquid in a lid or other container and place the cut-out saying for 3 to 5 seconds. Then place the paper face down on the stone and gently press it down. Wait 30 seconds and remove the paper. The lettering should now be on the stone. Fix the lettering with transparent acrylic varnish.

Make stones with sayings yourself – ideas
What kind of spell you choose depends, of course, on the size of the stones. Small pebbles, for example, only offer space for a few words. So stones can be painted with “happiness”, “love”, “friendship”, “Carpe Diem” and the like. If you want to paint stones with sayings that are longer, you should choose larger river stones. Smooth stone slabs are also suitable.
You can paint stones with sayings in German, but of course stones with sayings in English or another language that you understand will look just as good. Therefore, there are numerous variants available to make not only yourself but also others happy. You can paint such stones for your birthday, but you can also paint stones for Christmas, Easter, a Jugendweihe or a prom and many other occasions.
We have put together a few ideas for you that you can use as inspiration. There are templates to print out, but you can also write them off directly.
